Director of Science and Projects
Island Conservation Society is looking for an experienced and highly qualified Director of Science and Projects. The successful candidate will report to the CEO and be:
Preferred requirements– All of the above plus at least 7 years of proven experience in the study of the ecology of fauna and flora in island ecosystems.
Desirable additional requirements- Advanced certification and experience as an open water scuba diver.
REMUNERATION
The position is for a two-year contract with a remuneration of R390,000 per annum, annual salary review and usual statutory benefits and deductions.
OTHER
This position will be based at Head Office, Pte Larue, Mahé.
- Responsible for the design and implementation of the conservation & scientific programmes of ICS on the Aride Island Special Reserve (AISR) and of the environmental conservation foundations (the Foundations) managed by ICS.
- Responsible for preparing and executing annual plans, directing the work of conservation staff and overseeing the management of conservation centres on the inner and outer islands.
- Responsible for coordinating and preparation of the monthly, quarterly and annual reports for AISR and the Foundations.
- Responsible for planning and executing the approved scientific and conservation projects.
- Required to represent ICS at relevant forums as necessary or as directed.

Reserve Manager
Island Conservation Society is looking for an experienced and highly qualified Reserve Manager. The successful candidate will report to the CEO and:
Minimum requirement – University undergraduate degree in ornithology, biology, conservation/environmental sciences or closely related field with relevant working experience.
Preferred requirement – As above with at least 5 years of proven experience in a senior management position and responsibility for the performance and output of senior and junior staff in a nature reserve, local or international conservation organisation and proven successful leadership of people with common aims.
Desirable requirement - Certification and/or demonstrable experience as a motor boat skipper.
REMUNERATION
The position is for a two-year contract with a remuneration of R360,000 per annum, subject to usual statutory benefits and deductions.
Board and accommodation are provided free of charge.
OTHER
The position is based at the Aride island Special Reserve (AISR). An annual bonus may be paid subject to performance appraisal.
- Have overall responsibility for the conservation and protection of all plant and animal species in the AISR in accordance with existing legislation, as further specified in policies, strategies and protocols prepared by ICS through the Aride Advisory Committee (AAC) and the CEO of ICS.
- Be responsible for the day-to-day management of the AISR, reporting directly to the CEO and indirectly to the AAC and other specialists where required.
- Be responsible for a small team of local and expatriate staff and volunteers.
- Have overall responsibility for the Environmental Management Plan and annual plans deriving therefrom.
- Be responsible for overseeing the preparation of the monthly, quarterly and annual reports for AISR.
- Be responsible for the implementation of the annual budget, and the stewardship and custody of the physical assets located within the AISR.
- Be responsible for the implementation of the Aride Handbook and approved biodiversity and anti-poaching protocols.
- Be responsible for safe handling on and off the Island, of all staff and approved visitors and the successful conduct of educational and guided tours in the AISR.

Preferred requirement– Postgraduate degree in Ornithology and significant field experience.
Desirable requirement- Certification and experience as an open water scuba diver and proven experience in boat skippering and boat handling generally.
