Outer Islands Of Seychelles |
Zwazo Sesel |
Aride Island, Tread Lightly
|
Edited by Adrian Skerrett, Michael Payet, Telma Pool, Judith Skerrett and Jeanne Mortimer. Second Edition. Outer Islands of Seychelles is the human and environmental story of these far-flung islands, lavishly illustrated throughout. It includes interviews with some of the people who lived a remote way of life that has now vanished. There are tales of ghosts and gris-gris, survival at sea, piracy and cyclones. A gazetteer details the geography, history and conservation value of each island. ICS now runs conservation centres at some of them, but modern threats continue to evolve and threaten the islands.

By Adrian Skerrett, Pat Matyot and Gerard Rocamora. Zwazo Sesel is the first book to give a Creole name to every species of bird that has been recorded in Seychelles. The linguistic origin of these names are explained and where there is local folklore connected with birds of Seychelles, this is also described. The book gives the English, French, and scientific names, explaining the often weird and wonderful story behind where each came from. This is not just a book about birds, it is a book about languages and how they relate to each other. The book is available in both English and French.
|
Edited by Tim Sands and Adrian Skerrett. Published as a celebration of the protection of one of the most important seabird colonies in the Indian Ocean, this book tells the story of Seychelles conservation and the changes in attitudes that have taken place within a single generation. 40 years ago, most people still saw the environment as a resource to be exploited without care for the future. Today, Seychelles is one of the world’s pioneers of conservation. There is a wide recognition of the fragility of the planet and the need to protect places such as Aride for future generations..
